Self-portrait: another attempt

Here is another attempt at a self-portait which I did yesterday. It’s a bit more successful I feel than the previous two attempyts and probably is a bit more of a likeness.

The wrinkles on the forhead are a bit better placed and look more three dimensional than before. The right eye looks a bit flat in hindsight so I could have studied that more carefully and added more subtle shading, maybe with an HB pencil to create more of an illusion of its sherical shape. But, I think the lit side of the face works better and looks a bit more three dimensional. I haven’t added shading in much of the negative space around the face as it was usually darker than the background, but maybe some light shading there would have given some texture and interest.

I quite like the mix of very carefully drawn face and then roughly sketched torso – but I probably should practice drawing the torso more carfully too to try and get across the three dimensional form of that and the way the clothing hangs and folds around the body.
